Asperger Syndrome

Asperger syndrome was previously used as a distinct diagnosis for individuals on the autism spectrum without significant language delay, and it's a term many people still identify with. Since 2013, it's been clinically folded into the broader diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Whichever term feels right to you, we're glad to talk it through.

Why isn't Asperger syndrome a separate diagnosis anymore?

The diagnostic manual used by clinicians combined it into autism spectrum disorder to better reflect that autism exists on a spectrum rather than as separate, distinct conditions.

Does that change how I'll be treated?

Not in terms of care itself. We focus on your specific needs and any co-occurring concerns like anxiety or attention difficulties, rather than the label alone. Visit our Autism Spectrum page for more on how we support patients.

Can adults be newly evaluated for this?

Yes. Many adults were never evaluated as children and seek an evaluation later in life for a better understanding of long-standing patterns in how they think, socialize, or experience the world.

You don't have to figure this out alone. Same-week appointments are often available.
